Chris Scan See John Hum combines thought provoking introspective lyrics and piano driven melodies to simultaneously pay tribute to prog rock's heyday and create a concept album that doesn't sound pretentious or dated. Favorite track: You And I Will Sleep.

about

See John Hum's brand of piano driven progressive rock has been carefully crafted into the debut album 'A Single Day' due for release September 2012.

The creative outlet of Newcastle based multi-instrumentalist Dean Carruthers, See John Hum's debut is an ambitious concept album which explores the emotional landscape of a person in the final day of their life.

Composed, performed and produced by Carruthers over 5 years and across 3 cities most of the record was written on a single piano, however the final incarnations of these songs travel much more diverse soundscapes.

The record opens with a darkly delicate piano motif and ends in a distorted wash of delayed piano's and mellotron. Between lies a diverse mix of genre blurring sounds; heavy, time signature crunching progressive rock, dark and deeply melodic piano hooks, soaring multi-tracked choirs and dense rhythmic washes of otherwordly piano's, strings, keyboards and guitars.

Lyrically the album explores the despair and exhaltation of the final day of a life. From the despairing progressive rock of 'In This Quiet' and 'Blessings', to the more beautifully melancholy 'A Single Day', as well as uplifting offerings like the glockenspiel driven dream pop of 'Come Back Down Again'.

For all its sonic twists and windings the album is bound by a distinct sound. 'A Single Day' is a salute back to the 70's era concept of an album. When a record was a complete body of work, rather than a bunch of singles which happen to add up to an hour running time.
